Geomatics is relatively new as a scientific term. It was coined by Dubuisson in the year 1969 by combining the terms geodesy and geoinformatics.[1] It includes the tools and techniques used in land surveying, geography, remote sensing, cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Compass), photogrammetry, and related forms of earth mapping. It was originally used in Canada, because it is similar in French and English. The term geomatics has since been adopted by the International Organization for Standardization, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and many other international authorities, although some (especially in the United States) have shown a preference for the term geospatial technology.

The GIS Applications course teaches the fundamental principles behind the application of GIS to many fields, from health, agriculture, crime, through many socioeconomic problems.
